Laneways are an unrealized part of many neighbourhoods’ open space networks. The full community potential of these spaces can be unlocked through physical interventions that create a sense of security and place.

In 2018, The Laneway Project worked with the Danforth Village Residents Association to revitalize the network of laneways in their neighbourhood near Danforth Ave and Main St.

Residents prioritized new greening, lighting, murals and traffic control measures for the spaces. In September 2018, we installed 30 new planters, 20 new street art murals and 20 new pedestrian-friendly, solar-powered and shielded lighting fixtures to transform the laneways into people-friendly places.

Thanks to Monica Wickeler and Bareket Kezwer for leading the mural process (with 20 other Toronto artists!), Sean Bergeron for lending us his considerable knowledge of permaculture, and Councillor McMahon for dedicating the Section 37 funding that has made this exciting transformation possible.
